Essex Federation anger at “disgraceful” Home Secretary
Statement from Chair and Secretary of Essex JBB in response to the speech given by the Home Secretary, Theresa May, to Police Federation of England and Wales Conference today.
“We wish to express our anger at the tone the Home Secretary used to address Conference. She showed not only a lack of regard for the hard work already done by PFEW toward change, but also contempt for Policing in general.”
“She called us ‘The best Police Service in the world’, but followed that by making reference to historic failures that had tainted the reputation of the Police service.
The main theme of her keynote speech was the outright threat that PFEW would have to reform, otherwise she would reform us. She made several references to the fact that the Federation had been founded by legislation, and could be changed by legislation. This was seen by all as a clear threat, and has been described as a bullying tactic.
The way in which she addressed Conference was a disgrace, and to see her face contorted with rage whilst she launched her ferocious and unwarranted attack on Police Officers showed the Police Service what her agenda is toward the Police Service.
The Home Secretary should be called to account for what she said, the way she said it, and for her utter contempt for British Police Officers, who are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job.”
