HMIC: Police officers need training in crime recording

ESSEX Police has been given six months to ensure that all officers are given training in crime recording, following an HM Inspectorate of Constabulary inspection.

The force was examined along with other forces as part of the most extensive inspection HMIC has ever undertaken into crime data integrity.  HMIC found an “effective approach to crime recording” at the force and praised the “strong and committed chief officer leadership for crime data integrity”.

However, the report said: “Within six months, the force should establish and begin operation of an adequate system of training in crime recording for all police officers and police staff who are responsible for making crime-recording decisions, and ensure those who require such training receive it as soon as reasonably practicable.”
