Fallen officer remembered as “larger than life character”
“A TOTALLY dedicated officer and larger than life character” is how a Hampshire Constabulary officer who died on duty has been remembered by colleagues.
A funeral took place on 22 April for PC Steve Rawson, 40, who was riding an unmarked police motorcycle when he was in collision with a silver BMW outside a petrol station on April 3.
He was taken to Southampton General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Chief Constable Andy Marsh, said: “PC Rawson was a totally dedicated officer and larger than life character who always made a positive contribution to his team and to the force.
“We are supporting his wife and family and our thoughts are with them at this devastating time. He will be missed by all who knew him.”
John Apter, chairman of Hampshire Police Federation said: “The loss of our colleague has shocked and saddened us all. Hampshire Police Federation will offer whatever support is required for the officers family and colleagues during this difficult time.”
PC Steve Rawson joined the force as a police staff controller in March, 1996 and worked at the Force Control Room, Netley, until 2003. He joined the police as a PC in March 2003.
Det Supt Dick Pearson, head of the Hampshire Major Investigation Team, said: “He was a well respected, larger than life character who was dedicated to his job. He will be deeply missed by his all who knew him.”
The driver of the BMW, a 35-year-old man sustained serious, but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.
A donation fund has been set up for PC Rawson’s family. Mr Apter added: “Steve leaves behind a wife and two small children, aged 4 years and 7 months. Any donations collected will go to the family.”
