Commendations for brave and dedicated officers

OFFICERS from across the county were recognised for their bravery and dedication at a special awards ceremony at Essex Police Headquarters.

Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh presented the recipients with commendations, which acknowledge acts of bravery, preventing harm to others through their quick thinking and decisive action – including PC Shaun Hammond (pictured).

PC Hammond, received a commendation for his bravery, decisive action and professionalism while rescuing a couple and their dog on Mersea Island.

PC Hammond was off duty when he heard the incident over the radio and using his knowledge of the local area, helped locate the couple in rising tides.

Without a thought for his own safety, the officer entered the mud and rescued the couple and their dog, waiting with them to provide support and reassurance until the RAF Search and Rescue Helicopter arrived.

A Detective Constable was commended for his role in securing the conviction of a man who had fled the country after officers found Class A and B drugs at his address.

During the investigation that led to the man’s arrest, the DC worked with the Passport Agency, the Serious and Organised Crime Agency and Interpol to bring the man back to the UK.

Four more detectives were commended for their investigation into the unlawful possession of explosives and firearms, which were discovered in a vehicle. The detectives worked with a range of specialist units to secure a conviction.

Finally, a PC based in Chelmsford was recognised for his investigative skills, dedication and professionalism in the search for a missing person.

Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh praised all of the officers receiving an award and said: “One of the greatest honours I have as Chief Constable is to open up these doors and say thank you for the remarkable things our officers do on a daily basis to keep the people of Essex safe.

“It is equally important that we take time to stop and recognise loved ones, family and friends for their continued support.”

Nick Alston, Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, added: “Today is an opportunity for me, on behalf of the people who elected me, to say thank you for what you do. I am always heartened to hear the remarkable stories of professionalism and dedication.”
