PC’s commendation for lifesaving actions

A POLICE Constable has been commended by the chief for saving the life of a man who was in her custody.

PC Olivia Pinder, who is based in Chelmsford, was praised at a ceremony at force headquarters earlier this month to celebrate the dedication, commitment and professionalism of Essex Police officers.

The man, who has not been named, suffered an epileptic seizure whilst in custody in October last year. Quick-thinking Olivia raised the alarm and administered vital first aid until the paramedics arrived.

She said: “It was quite nerve wracking as I had only been in the job for 17 months. It was a large fit and it was my first time of having to administer first aid. We got him to hospital but then he had another fit there. The whole incident was quite draining.”

Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh told all the award winners at the ceremony: “Today is an opportunity to say thank you for the bravery, decency and amazing work you do. Whether it’s pulling people from car parks, giving first aid to people hit by trains or saving lives, you have shown truly remarkable courage and compassion.”

Olivia added: “When I got the email to say I’d been commended I was really surprised. I didn’t know I had even been put forward for a commendation. It’s amazing. My Dad is really proud. He did 30 years with Essex Police and never got a commendation, so he’s also quite jealous!”
