Federation urges members to #KnowYourRights

ESSEX Police Federation is urging members to check in locally when it comes to them knowing their rights.

The Police Federation of England and Wales has launched a new Know Your Rights campaign kicking off by offering officers information on annual leave and what to do if their days off are cancelled.

“Its important officers know their rights,” Essex Police Federation Chairman Steve Taylor said.

“The regulations can be a really difficult read so having it explained in clear English is a really beneficial way of spending our time.

“We ran a series in Essex a couple of months ago around Know Your Rights which ran for about six weeks, and we covered most of the main topics on our Facebook page.

“That was well received. My one concern with the centre doing it is, being frank, they don’t know all the rights that Essex officers have or haven’t got.

“So, whilst they can speak generally, actually for the best answer speak to your local federation,” he added.

“We have local agreements and arrangements in place. Sometimes these are better than regulations, sometimes they’re different to regulations. As a starter for ten, have a look at what the national federation are doing. But, if in doubt, please speak to your local federation.”
