Essex Police Federation reacts to resignation of Theresa May

ESSEX Police Federation wants the new Prime Minister to show more respect to policing than their predecessor.

Theresa May’s resignation has ignited a race by leading Conservative MPs to fill her shoes as Prime Minister.

She didn’t endear herself to policing during her watch as Prime Minister or as Home Secretary when she oversaw years of cuts in officer numbers and resources.

And now Steve Taylor, Essex Police Federation Chairman wants to see the Government show some respect to the hardworking and dedicated officers on the frontline who have had to do more with less and who have been awarded miserly pay rises in recent years.

“I’d like to see the new Prime Minister demonstrate the respect that we hold in our communities at the national level,” Steve said.

“For too long policing in this country has been disrespected by central Government. It’s not taken seriously. We’re not listened to as subject matter experts. This must stop. It’s not fair and it’s in no one’s interest that it continues.

“It’s difficult to see how it could be any worse and therefore we welcome a change at the top.”
