Police officers Run to Remember PC Nicola Hughes

POLICE Officers, Community Support Officers and members of Police Staff will be running two miles a day for 125 days in memory of PC Nicola Hughes.

The “Run to Remember” – organised by PC Hughes’s father Bryn (pictured with his daughter) and step mother Nat – starts on December 1. The Hughes family are planning for the 125 day “Run to Remember” to finish on the same day – April 9 2014 – that Bryn departs to the North Pole with his friend Robert Stapleton to run a charity marathon in freezing conditions.

A spokesman said: “Officers and staff can run alone, in pairs, all together, it’s up to you.

We ask that you try to start and finish on the same day as everyone else and we hope that each team member tries to raise £100 each.

“If you raise more – don’t worry that’s fine with us!”

Bryn Hughes said: “I wanted to do something positive to remember Nicola by. The biggest motivation is making sure people remember Nicola and remember what sort of person she was.

“The Run to Remember already has 1,000 runners registered from Avon and Somerset police – right up to Police Scotland.”

Charities to benefit from the Run to Remember and the North Pole Marathon are Care of Police Survivors, the North West Police Benevolent Fund and Victim Support.

Bryn added: “I want to do something that Nicola would have been proud of me for and I also want to raise money for the three charities that have helped us so much during this time and will probably continue to help us for a great deal longer.”

Greater Manchester Police PCs Hughes, 23, and Fiona Bone, 32, were shot dead while they investigated a suspected burglary in Hattersley, Tameside, last year.

Dale Cregan, 30, was given a whole-life sentence in June for their murders. Cregan was also jailed for the murders of father and son David and Mark Short.
