ESSEX Police Federation hopes the Government will \u2018listen to the evidence\u2019 when it comes to this year\u2019s police pay review submission.<\/p>\n
The PFEW, in conjunction with the Police Superintendents\u2019 Association (PSA), has published its submission to the Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB).<\/p>\n
PFEW leaders want to see a pay uplift of 5% across all ranks.\u00a0Last year officers were awarded 2.5%.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s nothing less than officers deserve, said Essex Police Federation Chairman Steve Taylor.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to put forward an evidence-based proposal, and we hope we get listened to for the first time, although we had a decent relationship with [former Home Secretary] Sajid Javid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat can we do? We can continue to advance the evidence case and hope that we are listened to. Of course, we hold the position that our officers and the work they do for our communities should elicit more reward than it currently does.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would be daft if the staff association wasn\u2019t saying that. But equally, it\u2019s evidence-based. It\u2019s not unreasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 5% uplift is one of 20 recommendations submitted, which include:<\/p>\n
The PFEW is also calling for a 150% uplift in the South East Allowance, payable to officers in the Home Counties.<\/p>\n
It aims to give officers extra insurance against the high cost of living in that part of the country \u2013 but given forces pay their officers different allowance amounts it can be a source of tension, Steve said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe South East allowance is becoming quite a divisive issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, we get the South East allowance in Essex, but we don\u2019t get as much as our colleagues in Kent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got colleagues in shared departments in Essex and Kent, who are doing the same role, but one officer gets paid more than the other simply because of their parent force.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that\u2019s the same in other forces; Surrey, Sussex, TVP, Hampshire, but we\u2019re starting to see it for the first time in Essex, and it\u2019s not nice.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s \u00a32,000 in Essex, but it can be up to \u00a33,000, but the chief has said they can\u2019t afford that,\u201d Steve added.<\/p>\n
\u201cKent this year have just agreed to raise theirs to \u00a32,500.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a subjectivity attached to the South East allowance that\u2019s unfair, and it shouldn\u2019t be that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
