{"id":1540,"date":"2014-11-25T11:22:42","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T11:22:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/essexfedfocus.co.uk\/?p=1540"},"modified":"2014-11-25T11:22:42","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T11:22:42","slug":"new-crime-recording-accreditation-and-training-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essexfedfocus.co.uk\/?p=1540","title":{"rendered":"New crime recording accreditation and training coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE College of Policing is seeking greater\u00a0consistency in crime recording for police forces across England and Wales with the introduction of new accreditation and training.<\/p>\n<p>A professional register for police crime registrars is being set up, as well as a new programme to ensure that that every registrar receives standard training and guidance, with the\u00a0first accreditation courses due to begin in the New Year.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Concerns have been raised about the integrity of police-recorded crime figures, one of the two major measures of crime in England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the UK Statistics Authority withdrew its gold-standard \u201cnational statistics\u201d status from police-recorded crime figures as a result of \u201caccumulating evidence\u201d that the data might be unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>Her Majesty\u2019s Inspectorate of Constabulary has since identified \u201cweak or absent\u201d management of crime-recording and a \u201csignificant\u201d under-recording of crime.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie Peacock, from the College of Policing, said the\u00a0crime registrar training programme\u00a0will\u00a0\u201censure that every police force crime registrar receives standard training and guidance to bring greater consistency to crime recording across the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Registrars will have to pass an assessed course and ensure they keep their skills and knowledge sufficiently up to date to be eligible for the professional register.<\/p>\n<p>The College is also looking at other elements of training so that \u201cevery officer has a better understanding of the wider importance of consistent data and research\u201d, said Ms Peacock.<\/p>\n<p>The new plans were unveiled last month at the first-ever two-day conference for crime registrars.<\/p>\n<p>The audience heard from Professor Stephen Shute, from the Crime Statistics Advisory Committee, who said police force crime registrars \u201cplay a vital role in the accurate recording and monitoring of crime data\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is at the\u00a0\u201cheart of maintaining public confidence and guides policy decisions worth many millions of pounds\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Farrar,\u00a0Chief Constable of Gwent Police and\u00a0National Policing Lead for Crime Statistics, said:\u00a0\u201cWe are working towards creating the best crime-recording system in the world that is consistently applied, delivers trusted statistics and has the needs of victims and public confidence at its core.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe development of this training and accreditation programme is an important step in delivering that ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE College of Policing is seeking greater\u00a0consistency in crime recording for police forces across England and Wales with the introduction of new accreditation and training.
