IF THE Government want the power to make police officers redundant, then British Bobbies must have the right to strike, Essex Police Federation have said.<\/p>\n
Home Secretary Theresa May told the Superintendents\u2019 Association Annual Conference this month that compulsory severance for police officers \u201cremains on the table\u201d.<\/p>\n
And chief officers are “reluctantly” considering asking for the power.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not employees, we\u2019re servants of the Crown and that\u2019s why we\u2019re treated differently,\u201d said Chairman Mark Smith.<\/p>\n
\u201cCompulsory severance should not even be an option, we\u2019re a special case, we do not have contracts.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf compulsory severance is introduced for police officers, then we start getting back into the realms of industrial rights, employment rights and contracts.<\/p>\n
If legislation is changed to introduce a power to make police officers redundant, would the Federation be justified in asking for industrial rights\/the power to strike?<\/p>\n
\u201cWell if we\u2019re being treated like any other employee then surely we should have everything else that goes with being an employee,\u201d added Mr Smith (pictured).<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the moment we\u2019re not employees, we\u2019re not treated as employees, and as I said we\u2019re Crown servants, covered by the regulations. The Government can\u2019t say, \u2018These are the Police Regulations, we\u2019re going to change the Regulations, and you can\u2019t do this, you can\u2019t belong to a union\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t have it all ways, either we are employees and we have everything that goes with being an employee, which includes compulsory severance or redundancy as it would be, or we\u2019re not employees and we are servants of the Crown, and we\u2019re protected that way through the Police Regulations.<\/p>\n
