AN OFFICER\u00a0from Basildon has been praised after performing life-saving CPR on a man who had collapsed during a football match.<\/p>\n
Sgt Ben\u00a0Woollard, of the Basildon Proactive team, was off-duty at a football match in Rochford when he spotted the man on the ground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Seeing the man was unconscious but breathing, Sgt\u00a0Woollard\u00a0(pictured)\u00a0quickly placed him in the recovery position and asked the other players to call an ambulance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Unfortunately, it wasn\u2019t long before the man slipped into cardiac arrest. With his condition worsening and no time to spare, the officer started CPR.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Recalling his first aid training, Sgt\u00a0Woollard administered two shocks to the man\u2019s chest with a defibrillator while continuing to resuscitate him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The man eventually regained consciousness and was taken to hospital, where he later received a quadruple bypass.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
He has since made a good recovery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Sgt\u00a0Woollard\u00a0was commended for his decisive action and quick thinking at a special awards ceremony at Essex Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
In commending the officer, Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh said:\u00a0\u201cLeadership is not about rank or insignia \u2013 it\u2019s what we carry inside. These officers are truly brave, truly remarkable and these commendations show what we really do and what support we give.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
