OFFICERS who are suffering fatigue at work must ensure they are taking their full entitlement of annual leave so they can properly rest away from the job.<\/p>\n
Steve Taylor, Chairman of Essex Police Federation, said any officers struggling at work should get in touch so the Federation can support them.<\/p>\n
He added that the force has already stopped officers working more than 50 hours in a week to help deal with the problem.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would ask officers \u2018Are you getting your annual leave? Have you taken your entitlement? Can we get you away?\u2019 Because if they have and they\u2019re still feeling tired then we\u2019re looking at their work environment,\u201d said Mr Taylor.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would need to find out how many hours they are doing \u2013 their regular hours or is a regular amount of overtime prevalent?<\/p>\n
\u201cI already know that officers who work more than 50 hours a week \u2013 and that\u2019s monitored on a weekly basis \u2013 they\u2019re flagged up to the district commanders. Those district commanders then instruct that individual, \u2018This overtime that you\u2019re doing, it stops. Because you\u2019re crossing the line into what\u2019s too much\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow invariably in those cases it\u2019s self-inflicted overtime which are people looking to earn some more money, etc. And so the job balance is what you need to do for your bank balance and what you need to do for your wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Taylor added that it was essential officers take all of their annual leave entitlement.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnnual leave is really important to recharge those batteries,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd without the recharge, you just get more and more run down.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou need a recharge every now and again, and if you\u2019re struggling to get your annual leave, and that\u2019s purely down to resources. We\u2019ve not got as many people on as we\u2019d like to have, and therefore it makes it that bit harder to get people off on leave, then that could be an explanation for why fatigue\u2019s starting to play more of a part.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
