{"id":4176,"date":"2018-03-27T12:33:54","date_gmt":"2018-03-27T12:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/essexfedfocus.co.uk\/?p=4176"},"modified":"2018-03-27T12:33:54","modified_gmt":"2018-03-27T12:33:54","slug":"peel-report-cracks-are-beginning-to-show-in-policing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essexfedfocus.co.uk\/?p=4176","title":{"rendered":"PEEL report: cracks are beginning to show in policing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SUBSTANTIAL cuts and extra workload demands are \u201coverwhelming\u201d police officers, says the new PEEL report from Her Majesty\u2019s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS).<\/p>\n<p>Cracks are, perhaps unsurprisingly, beginning to show as policing is placed under increasingly significant stress.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On occasions, says report author Zoe Billingham, this stress is preventing some forces from being able to adequately keep people safe in some important areas of police work.<\/p>\n<p>Her report found that around a quarter of forces are all too often \u2018overwhelmed\u2019 by the demands they face, resulting in backlogs of emergency jobs which are preventing officers from being able to protect the public.<\/p>\n<p>However, she praised officers across the country for their considerable efforts in keeping policing standards high.<\/p>\n<p>This latest PEEL report investigated effectiveness in the UK force and focused on the overall question; \u2018How effective is the force at keeping people safe and reducing crime?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Durham Constabulary was judged as \u2018outstanding\u2019, 30 forces were \u2018good\u2019 and 12 were deemed to be in need of improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the intense pressures facing them, no police force was judged to be performing inadequately.<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlighted the issues in Detective Policing with a shortfall of 5,000 investigators being reported across England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>It also urged police leaders to ensure staff are fully supported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice officers, police staff and PCSOs rise to significant challenges every single day,\u201d Zoe continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s vital that police leaders take effective action to stop the problems we have found becoming ever more entrenched and widespread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police Federation of England and Wales Chair Calum Macleod said: \u201cThis report has made it clear that what we have been saying for years is true \u2013 policing in this country is reaching breaking point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer Majesty\u2019s Inspector Zoe Billingham, who led the inspection, states the service is under \u2018significant stress\u2019 and that this stress is so severe in some forces they are at risk of \u2018being unable to keep people safe\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet that sink in. The Government\u2019s own inspector has said that some parts of the police service in the country are so stretched that people may be put in danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is not a wake-up call I don\u2019t know what is. We cannot allow this situation to deteriorate to such an extent where people are routinely put a risk.
