POLICE assaults, the number of officers and shift patterns – just a few issues the new Essex Police Chief Constable will need to focus on, says Essex Police Federation Chairman Steve Taylor.<\/p>\n
He says he\u2019s looking forward to working with BJ Harrington who\u2019s been named as Essex PCC\u2019s proposed candidate for the role.<\/p>\n
The new candidate will succeed Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s really encouraging that we\u2019ve got a promising and strong leader waiting in the wings in BJ,\u201d Steve said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s lots of work we could continue to work with him on such as Protect the Protectors, general demand, number of officers and shift patterns so I would be very encouraged to see his arrival.\u201d<\/p>\n
He would be a tough act to follow though, Steve said, who added he was \u2018very sorry\u2019 to see Stephen leave.<\/p>\n
The new Chief Constable will have a lot on his plate Steve warned.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s all about resources, resources, resources \u2013 it\u2019s at the heart of everything we do.<\/p>\n
\u201cVery simply, there are not enough of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are too few of us doing more with less, and that creates strains and stresses.<\/p>\n
\u201cAddressing those strains and stresses when you\u2019re not in an ability to argue resource is the nub of all our issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we can\u2019t beat it at source then trying to fight some of the symptoms such as health and wellbeing, such as shift patterns, such as officer assaults, then doing what we can in those areas is where our focus should be.<\/p>\n
