{"id":4469,"date":"2018-06-21T15:01:18","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T15:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/essexfedfocus.co.uk\/?p=4469"},"modified":"2018-06-22T19:14:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T19:14:38","slug":"its-ludicrous-to-think-that-officers-need-degrees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essexfedfocus.co.uk\/?p=4469","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s &#8216;ludicrous&#8217; to think that officers need degrees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PLANS to make degrees part of new police recruits\u2019 training has been dismissed as \u2018ludicrous\u2019 by Essex Police Federation.<\/p>\n<p>By 2020 three routes will be open to those interested in a career in policing; an apprenticeship, \u2018Degree Holder Entry,\u2019 open for anyone with a degree in any subject, and a \u2018Pre-Join Degree\u2019 programme.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The new paths are part of the College of Policing\u2019s new Police Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF) &#8211; both degree programmes will include an element of on the job training.<\/p>\n<p>Home Secretary Sajid Javid and Met Police Chief Constable Cressida Dick have recently said they don\u2019t believe officers must have degrees &#8211; a viewpoint shared by Essex Police Federation Chair Steve Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s ludicrous. The police are the public and the public are the police. Does everyone in the communities officers police have a degree? No. Therefore why should every officer have one?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me the plans will close the door on entry into the service which relies on competence and capability rather than degrees, it\u2019s not reflective of society and I do not understand the drive and push around this at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The College of Policing has taken to Twitter to explain the new scheme and admitted there has been a \u2018lot of confusion\u2019 around it.<\/p>\n<p>It also said that non-degree paths will be open for recruits.<\/p>\n<p>Steve added: \u201cThe police service creates people that work to a degree level already, so why don\u2019t we spend our energies and funds on supporting the officers that we have to reach that level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe for a minute that the College has set out to damage policing deliberately, but this is harming the service and it cheapens us, it\u2019s taking us away from our Peelian Principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The College\u2019s on-the-job apprenticeship entry scheme, which will give recruits a degree after three years, isn\u2019t the answer either says Steve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll be on \u00a318,000 a year \u2013 less than what officers were getting 20 years ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll be working just four days a week, which won\u2019t do anyone any favours, and they\u2019ll face the same stresses and strains as their colleagues but will be paid less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll just to dance to this degree tune which nobody wants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, my degree hasn\u2019t helped me out there on Friday and Saturday nights when I\u2019ve dealt with violent drunks and it hasn\u2019t helped me deliver dreadful news to bereaved loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems to me the College is just not listening to us.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLANS to make degrees part of new police recruits\u2019 training has been dismissed as \u2018ludicrous\u2019 by Essex Police Federation.
