ESSEX Police Federation says new plans to offer \u00a34,000 bonus payments to help recruit to hard to fill roles could led to a \u2018them and us\u2019 culture.<\/p>\n
Home Secretary Sajid Javid rubber stamped the plan first formulated when The Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) said in its annual report that chief officers should be allowed to make extra payments to help ease gaps in police roles \u201curgently\u201d.<\/p>\n
It means bonus payments of up to \u00a34,000 for federated ranks and superintendents who \u2018face exceptional challenges\u2019, can be given.
\n\u201cIt feels like a rehash of special priority payments and for me is a step away from a regimental increase in pay simply because of years of service. That\u2019s what they\u2019re trying to move away from.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, your pay doesn\u2019t necessarily go up just because you\u2019ve got more time on the job.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey want to target it. But, of course, the fear is that it\u2019s a race to the bottom and it\u2019s divisive and we\u2019re going to pay dog handlers and custody Sergeants but we\u2019re not going to pay response Sergeants and firearms officers, for example, which could arguably lead to that them and us culture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Steve thinks the plan could be the first step on the road to privatising elements of the police service.<\/p>\n
\u201cArguably, if you wanted to privatise your police service this is a really good way of separating our ranks, of separating our roles. \u2018Let\u2019s privatise custody, let\u2019s give it to G4S. Let\u2019s privatise dog handlers\u2019. None of us want to see that.<\/p>\n
