264 Essex Police officers took time off due to stress, anxiety, depression or PTSD last year, figures have revealed.<\/p>\n
Essex Police Federation Chairman Steve Taylor says it\u2019s important that members look after each other. \u201cMental health definitely are not dirty words and we should be supportive of colleagues who suffer with mental health, just as we are with those that suffer with poor physical health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not able to look after people suffering with mental health if we\u2019re burying our heads in the sand when it comes to questions around it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need a maturity around the whole subject and what matters is identifying and coping with those that are struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Steve thinks culture in the force is starting to change, that officers are starting to realise coming forward is key and that they are making use of the resources available to them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI doubt there\u2019s a colleague in the organisation who doesn\u2019t work with someone who is suffering with their mental health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd opening our eyes to that is a journey that we\u2019re currently on and that we\u2019re working hard on getting right.<\/p>\n
\u201cEssex is in a stronger place than most forces in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is \u2018Live Well, Feel Well\u2019 campaign that HR have led on, that\u2019s a positive example of getting it right and what we can do.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the \u2018Blue Light\u2019 Mind campaign and others, there\u2019s always work to be done in this area, but it\u2019s a journey that we\u2019ve started on and we\u2019re having some success in I think.\u201d<\/p>\n
