THE public\u2019s \u2018dented\u2019 confidence in policing is entirely down to the squeeze the current Government continues to exert on policing, says Essex Police Federation.<\/p>\n
A recent report from the Commons Public Accounts Committee revealed that public confidence in the police had taken a blow due to cuts forcing crimes to be prioritised.<\/p>\n
It also accused the Home Office of not understanding policing and said that the way the service is funded needs an \u2018urgent\u2019 overhaul.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s down to the Government\u2019s inability to listen, its apparent lack of interest,\u201d Essex Police Federation Chairman Steve Taylor said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey just stick to their lines that crime isn\u2019t rising. It\u2019s just all a joke and they\u2019re kidding no one and offending everyone. I\u2019m not surprised the Accounts Committee have said that confidence in policing is at rock bottom.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe that\u2019s because the public have a better understanding of crime that the Government do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Steve added that the current police funding formula is \u2018desperately\u2019 unfair.<\/p>\n
\u201cEssex isn\u2019t dealt the best hand by that funding formula,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd at the same time, they tie our hands when it comes to raising funds locally with the precept cap which is just ridiculous.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey suggest local autonomy and local control around police budgets and yet hamstring any efforts to exercise that. It\u2019s ridiculous.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thought it was getting better and then the pension thing was mandated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a self-created burden because of the government actuaries. Why don\u2019t the ministers and officials in the Home Office just change the rules of the actuary?<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they\u2019ve imposed it on the police service which isn\u2019t allowed to run a negative budget, whereas the health service frequently post a negative budget because they know the Government will bail them out. \u00a320 billion this year, \u00a320 billion next, who knows?<\/p>\n
